Column Base Plate

Two checks decide a base plate. Concrete bearing sets the plan size — the plate must spread the column load until the concrete beneath can take it. Cantilever bending of the plate overhang then sets the thickness, using whichever overhang is larger.

Concentric axial load only — no moment, no shear transfer, no anchor rod design or embedment, and no confinement benefit from a footing larger than the plate. A base plate carrying moment is a different and considerably harder problem.
