Chain Drive & Sprockets

Sprocket pitch diameter is PD = p / sin(180°/N). Chain length must come out as an even number of pitches (an odd count needs a weak offset link), so the buildable centre distance is always a little larger than your target.

Keep at least 120° of wrap and 17+ teeth on the small sprocket — fewer teeth means more chordal action (pulsing speed) and faster wear. Chain rating also depends on lubrication method.
