Flange & Gasket Load

A gasketed flange must satisfy two conditions: enough load to seat the gasket initially (Wm2), and enough to hold it sealed against the hydrostatic end force in service (Wm1). Bolt for whichever is larger.

ASME BPVC VIII-1 Appendix 2 form. m and y come from the gasket maker (compressed fibre ≈ m 2.75 / y 25.5 MPa; spiral wound ≈ m 3.0 / y 69 MPa). Torque them evenly in a star pattern.
