Annular Snap-Fit

A bead on a shaft snapping into a groove in a hub. The permissible interference is simply y = ε · d when one part is rigid — and if both parts flex, the strain is shared and the interference can be twice as large. Assembly force is the hard part: the bead stretches a local length of the tube rather than the whole ring, so both source guides treat it as an estimate.

Interference y is diametral, not radial — the difference between the largest shaft diameter and the smallest hub diameter. The geometry factor combines the thick-wall (Lamé) rigidity of the hub with a correction for the bead only deforming a local length of tube; both source guides describe the resulting mating force as an estimate rather than a prediction. An inseparable design needs a split-cavity mould, so avoid it unless the joint genuinely must never come apart.

Elastic snap-fit theory after the Ticona and Bayer design guides. Does not cover creep under sustained load, fatigue over many cycles, weld lines or moulding tolerances. A helper, not a substitute for engineering judgment.
