Spline Torque Capacity
Spacing errors mean only a fraction of spline teeth actually share the load — typically about 25%. Capacity comes from the allowable side pressure on the tooth flanks, checked against tooth shear.

First-order estimate. A full check (SAE J498 / ANSI B92.1) also covers bursting of the external member, root fatigue and misalignment derating — and fretting, which kills more splines than overload.
