Stepper Torque & Microstepping

Microstepping buys resolution, not accuracy — the incremental torque available to move one microstep falls as sin(90°/microsteps). At 1/8 stepping a single microstep can only command about 20% of holding torque.

Holding torque also falls with speed as the winding inductance limits current — check the motor's speed–torque curve.
