Nyquist again, in space: you need at least two pixels across the smallest feature you must see, and realistically three to four to measure it repeatably. One pixel is not detection — it is noise that sometimes looks like a part.

These pixel counts assume good contrast and focus. Sub-pixel edge fitting can beat them on a clean, high-contrast edge, but never design to that as the baseline.
